概要
What is Kaga Yuzen? — One of Japan's two great dyeing traditions, born in this city
Crimson / Purple / Deep green / Ochre / Prussian blue
Kaga Yuzen is a 300-year-old Kanazawa dyeing tradition — alongside Kyoto's Kyo Yuzen, one of only two styles recognised as Japan's highest-level dyeing art. Its signature is the Kaga go-sai (five Kaga colours above), its realistic depiction of nature drawn from observation rather than imagination, and the mushikui technique — deliberately painting the edges of leaves and petals as if insects have eaten them, because in nature, perfect things don't exist. Each piece takes weeks or months. The artisan you'll meet today has spent their life inside this tradition.
Kanazawa was built by people who believed that beauty was a civic responsibility. The Maeda lords — who ruled this domain for 300 years without losing it to war — poured their political energy into culture rather than conflict. Kaga Yuzen, Kenrokuen, and the shrine you'll visit this morning are all expressions of the same conviction: that how you live matters as much as whether you survive.
This full-day experience moves through four chapters of that conviction — a shrine, a castle, a garden, and a dyeing studio — with a local guide whose personal connection to Kanazawa's history ties them together into a single coherent story rather than a sequence of tourist stops.
The morning is about understanding. The afternoon is about making something with your own hands, guided by someone who has spent a lifetime learning how.

Oyama Shrine — where Kanazawa's founding lord is enshrined
~Morning The day begins at Oyama Shrine — built in 1599 to honour Maeda Toshiie, the lord who established Kanazawa's 300-year dynasty. The Shinkomon gate is immediately distinctive: a three-storey structure combining Dutch stained glass, Chinese architectural elements, and Japanese shrine design — a deliberate cosmopolitan statement by a lord who understood that cultural openness was a form of strength. Your guide's personal relationship with this sacred space reveals stories that change with each season and visit.

Kanazawa Castle Park
Kanazawa Castle Grounds — the architecture of survival
Walk to the castle grounds where your guide brings the Maeda clan's political genius to life — how they built a castle impressive enough to declare power, restrained enough not to provoke Tokugawa attack, and designed to project cultural sophistication as much as military strength. The same lords who built this castle also supported Kaga Yuzen, Kenrokuen, and the tea ceremony masters who would come to define Kanazawa's identity. Your guide shows you the thread.

Kenrokuen Garden
Kenrokuen Garden — tea café break inside one of Japan's Three Great Gardens(¥320 entry)
Enter Kenrokuen — the garden the Maeda lords built over two centuries as a private meditation on the six impossible ideals of garden design. Your guide walks you through the philosophical framework while the garden itself does most of the teaching. At a traditional tea café chosen by your guide, sit down for a refreshing drink — the midpoint of the day, and the moment to absorb what the morning has revealed before the afternoon begins.

Kaga Yuzen studio — meet the artisan and dye your own piece
The afternoon belongs to Kaga Yuzen. Your guide introduces you to the artisan personally — their background, their philosophy, what their daily relationship with this craft looks like in practice. The artisan shares stories of apprenticeship, family tradition, and the particular challenges of keeping a 300-year-old dyeing technique alive in a contemporary world. Then you work alongside them, creating your own piece using traditional Kaga Yuzen techniques: the resist paste, the brush, and the five colours that define this tradition. What you make reflects both your creativity and the artisan's guidance. The imperfections are part of it — as the mushikui technique teaches, nature never produces anything without a mark.
