Higashi Chaya District machiya studio, Kanazawa

概要

This workshop is set inside the Higashi Chaya District — one of Japan's best-preserved geisha districts, a 10-minute walk from Kanazawa Station. Arriving early to walk the neighbourhood before your session is strongly recommended.

Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan's gold leaf. Every piece you've seen on a temple, a lacquered box, or a bowl of gold-flecked ice cream started here — in rooms like the one you're about to enter.

In the historic Higashi Chaya District — where geisha culture and craft tradition evolved side by side for centuries — a restored machiya townhouse is where this workshop takes place. The artisans who guide you here are not instructors hired for tourists. They are people whose daily lives are woven into gold leaf: the seasonal rhythms of the work, the way humidity changes how the foil behaves, and the stories of why they chose to keep these techniques alive in a world that rarely slows down to notice them.
You'll work alongside your guide — choosing an item to gold-leaf, learning the technique, and making it together. But the real experience is the conversation that unfolds as you work: about craft, daily life in Kanazawa, what tradition means to someone who practises it every morning, and what the particular piece you're making might mean to you.
What you take home is not a souvenir. It is something you made with your own hands, in a room with a person who chose to spend their life making beautiful things.

ルート

  1. 1

Enter the machiya — and meet the person behind the gold

Your guide welcomes you into the restored townhouse and shares how they came to this work. You'll understand immediately that this is not a demo booth — it's a working studio that happens to have space for you today.

  2. 2

Select the item you'll transform with gold leaf

Choose from lacquered chopsticks, a small ceramic plate, or a decorative box — each offering a different surface to work with and a different challenge. Your guide will help you choose based on your level of patience and what would mean most to bring home. Chopsticks:Elegant, wearable gold. Delicate application — satisfying precision.(Most Chosen) Small plate:Larger surface, more expressive. Great for bold patterns. Decorative box:Three-dimensional challenge. Stunning as a keepsake or gift.

  3. 3

Learn why gold leaf behaves the way it does — then apply it yourself

Gold leaf is 0.0001mm thick — thinner than a human fingerprint. Your guide demonstrates how humidity, breath, and even the static from your fingers affect how it moves. Then you try. The first application is always surprising. The second one feels like you know something you didn't before.

  4. 4

The conversation that happens while your hands are busy

As you work — gently pressing, layering, smoothing — your guide shares what this craft means in their daily life: the seasonal variations in the foil, the artisans in the neighbourhood they collaborate with, the intersection of Kanazawa's tea culture, geisha tradition, and gold leaf that exists only in this district. The mindfulness of the technique opens something in the conversation.

  5. 5

Something made with your hands, in this room, today

Your guide inspects the finished piece with you — noting what's uniquely yours about how it turned out. They'll wrap it carefully and suggest how to care for it. Most guests say they display it prominently at home. Not because it's perfect. Because they remember exactly who they were talking to when they made it.

待ち合わせ場所

Higashi Chaya District machiya studio, Kanazawa

Exact address confirmed on booking. A 10-minute walk from Kanazawa Station East Exit, or 5 minutes from the Higashiyama bus stop. Your guide meets you at the studio entrance.

注意事項

We recommend arriving 20 minutes early to walk the Higashi Chaya street — it's one of the most beautiful lanes in Japan, and seeing it before the tourist crowds arrive sets the right mood for what follows.

◾️ Good to Know
No experience required — the technique is taught from scratch. Suitable for anyone from age 10 upward.
Gold leaf is extremely delicate — wear dark, close-fitting clothing you don't mind getting small traces of lacquer or adhesive on.
Each session reflects the artisan's current seasonal approach — no two workshops are identical.
The studio is a working machiya — you are a guest in a real craft space, not a purpose-built tourist facility. Please treat it accordingly.
Photography is welcome throughout. The gold leaf application moment is particularly striking — your guide will tell you the best moment to capture it.
Higashi Chaya is best explored early morning — consider booking a morning session.
