概要
Kanazawa has two kinds of gold. One you drink. One you can hold — barely.
The morning starts inside the castle, in a garden the Maeda lords kept for themselves. It is older than Kenrokuen next door, and it was never built to impress guests. It was built to be looked at, privately, from one room. That room still serves tea, and you'll sit in it with a bowl of matcha and a seasonal sweet while your guide explains what the lords were actually looking at — including a stone wall patterned like scattered poem cards, built as scenery rather than defense, and found in no other castle in Japan.
Then you walk. Down through the old merchant street, across the Asano River, into Higashi Chaya. On the way your guide answers the question nobody thinks to ask: why does this one city produce almost all of Japan's gold leaf? The answer is in the humidity, the water, and three centuries of a clan that wanted its temples to shine.
You finish at Sakuda, a gold leaf house since 1919, at a workbench with an artisan. You'll lay out your own design, brush on the adhesive, and set a sheet of gold one ten-thousandth of a millimeter thick onto a pair of chopsticks — the thinnest material human hands still work by hand. Your guide is beside you the whole time, so nothing is lost to a translation app. The chopsticks go home with you the same day.
Two rooms, two hundred meters of gold, one morning

Kanazawa Castle Park
The garden the lords kept off the guest list
Before the tea, a short walk through it: the stepped waterfall spilling from midway up the castle wall, the pond that uses the castle's own steep terrain, and the stonework laid out like scattered poem cards. Gyokusen'in — wife of the second lord, daughter of the warlord Oda Nobunaga — lived here. The garden was lost in the Meiji era and rebuilt from what excavation could prove, reopening in 2015.

玉泉庵(玉泉院丸庭園内)
A bowl of matcha, facing what the lords looked at
Seated on tatami with the garden filling the window, you receive a seasonal wagashi and a bowl of matcha. This is not a formal ceremony to sit through — it's the way tea has actually been taken in this room for centuries: slowly, in conversation. Your guide talks you through what's in front of you, from why the sweet comes first to what the season has to do with the bowl you're holding.

The walk that explains the gold
Owaricho → Asanogawa Ohashi Bridge Thirty minutes on foot through the old merchant quarter, past a confectioner that has served the clan for four hundred years, over the Asano River and into the teahouse district. Your guide uses the walk to set up what's coming: the climate that lets gold be beaten this thin here and almost nowhere else, and what the Maeda clan's ambition had to do with it.

金箔屋さくだ 本店(金銀箔工芸さくだ)/金箔貼り体験
Gold leaf, one ten-thousandth of a millimeter, on your own chopsticks
At the workbench with an artisan: choose your chopsticks, mask your design, brush the adhesive, and lay the leaf. It tears if you breathe wrong — everyone's first sheet does. Then the excess is swept away and the pattern appears. Between steps, you can watch the artisans handling full sheets in the workshop, work rarely shown to anyone outside the trade.

Higashi Chaya District
Yours to keep, same day
Your finished chopsticks are wrapped and handed over. Your guide leaves you in the middle of Higashi Chaya with their own list — where the good sake counter is, which lane to walk at dusk, where lunch is worth it.

Gyokusen'inmaru Garden entrance
1-1 Marunouchi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa
Your guide meets you at the garden entrance. The closest entrances to Gyokusen'inmaru Garden are the Imorizaka Gate and the Gyokusen'inmaru Gate — pass through Nezumita-mon Gate and the garden is right there.
注意事項
Please arrive at the Gyokusen'inmaru Garden entrance at the time your guide tells you. The gold leaf workshop runs on fixed session times, so the schedule cannot be shifted once started.
Maximum 6 participants — always private, never merged with another group.
The teahouse is tatami seating. Let your guide know at booking if sitting on the floor is difficult; a seat can be arranged.
Chopsticks are the included item. Plates, small boxes, and other pieces can be upgraded on the day at your own cost.
The walk between the two stops is about 30 minutes on flat ground. A taxi can be arranged instead — please request at booking.
Suitable for children. The artisan adapts the workshop naturally, and stencils are available.
Garden admission is free; the teahouse and workshop fees are included in the price.
Both the garden and the teahouse may close temporarily for maintenance or weather. Your guide will contact you in advance and propose an alternative.
