In 2019, which will be the fourth time it is organized, the event divides the session into three seasons of spring, summer, and autumn: "Spring Encounters" from April 26 to May 26, "Summer Gatherings" from July 19 to August 25, and "Fall Expansions" from September 28 to November 4.

The Seto Inland Sea is the largest inland sea in Japan at about 450 km east-west and 15-50 km north-south. It is surrounded by Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, the three large islands of the Japanese archipelago, and it is also called Setouchi including coastal area. There are numerous islands of various sizes in the Seto Inland Sea, and 727 islands were recorded in a study by the Japanese Coast Guard. They counted only islands with a circumference of 0.1 km or more, so there are far more islands if including small ones.

The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival that encounters the culture and lifestyles cultivated on the islands, using art as the signposts for visiting the islands.
The event will be held in 14 venues on 12 islands. The number of works for 2019 is not fixed as it is currently being determined,
but the 2016 exhibition featured 206 works from 34 countries. art_festival_setouchi
