About "Countryside in the winter"

Oil on board (size1), with a label signed and sealed by Tamura Kazuo, framed, appeared in "Okada Saburosuke Catalogue" published by Benrido (10×21cm / 30×40cm)
This is a rare piece from early stage of Okada Saburosuke's career. It was painted during Saburosuke’s training period under Western painter Soyama Sachihiko. The fellow painters who learned under Soyama include those who made established themselves in Western style painting in Japan such as Fujishima Takeji and Wada Eisaku. Saburosuke displayed an outstanding talent especially in his rich sense of color. The tense air that spreads through the winter twilight countryside is carefully painted with vivid colors and an elegant touch. Although it is a small piece from an early period, it is an excellent work that combines the dignity of a classic Western painting with mysterious colors that seem to predict the promising future of Saburosuke.
About "Okada Saburōsuke"
Okada Saburōsuke was a painter in Meiji to Showa period. Born in Saga prefecture, he was the fourth son of Ishio family (a former feudal warrior of Nabeshima). Okada moved to Tokyo at a young age, and it was during his stay with the former feudal warrior at Nabeshima that he came in touch with paintings by Hyakutake Kaneyuki (a painter from the same town), and aspired to become a painter. After studying under Soyama Sachihiko, Okada gained knowledge from Kuroda Seiki and learnt Pleinairisme. He also traveled to France and studied under Raphael Collin as an exchange student from the Ministry of Education. After returning to Japan Okada taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts and played a crucial role in developing the next generation of students. He was also awarded the Order of Culture.
