The Rapeseed Garden in Yokohama-machi

Rapeseed Flower

The “Nanohana,” or rapeseed flower, marks the arrival of spring in Japan. Along the locals, it is known as “Haru no Momiji,” or the maple leaf of spring. It is deeply appreciated by the Japanese people and symbolizes little happiness, brightness, and richness. It is also eaten during springtime to celebrate the season.

Yokohama-machi in Aomori prefecture is at the northern tip of mainland Japan; therefore, its blossoming period is later than that of other regions in Japan. Every year around early May, the blossoming of the rapeseed will be announced to the public. Yokohama-machi has the largest rapeseed field in Japan with a garden that covers 163 hectares. The end of May marks the end of the blossoming of the flower, so make sure to book your trip during May. The species of “Kizakino-natane” is used for the flower garden. It can withstand harsh coldness and snow, which is important since Aomori Prefecture is known for its harsh and snowy winters. It is also known to produce good quality rapeseed oil, which is sold commercially. Rapeseed goods are also available in souvenir stores.

There are eight total gardens in the region. The most popular garden is the “Nanohana Daimeiro,” or the great Rapeseed flower maze. It is located near the festival. “Niwatorizawa”, “Tarousuda”, “Ueitayanoki” are located along National Highway 297, while “Uschinozawa” and “Domeki” are located along National Highway 297. These are known to blossom early. The “Houei Heichi” and the “Nanohana Daimeiro” bloom later.

This garden is open throughout the year, so make sure to visit if you enjoy nature. This scenery is juxtaposed with the traditional cherry blossoms that you can see during spring.

Various events taking place in Yokohama-machi

The Maze

The “Nanohana Daimeiro” is the most prominent park in Yokohama-machi. Every year, the shape of the maze is unique. In 2016, the birds-eye view of the garden celebrated the decision to host the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. In 2017, the garden celebrated the opening of the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hokkaido. The maze is made just before the blooming of the rapeseed in early April. The area to be removed is mowed, and the ground is flattened to make it easy for pedestrians to walk through. At this time, the observation tower is placed. If you look west, you will be able to see Matsu Bay. When you look east, you will be able to see the garden of Rapeseed flowers and the wind turbines. If you look north, you will be able to see Mount Kamafuse. This is a spectacular scenery you can’t miss.

There are various activities open to the public as well. There is a rapeseed blossom festival that takes place annually on the 3rd Sunday of May. Some events take place that children can also enjoy. Furthermore, there is an annual marathon for sporty people. There are also photo contests that you can participate in, as well as a farmer’s market you can visit.

The best time to visit is from the middle of May to the end of the month, so be sure to visit the yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers.
