The fish market proximity to the city

The word of “Iyumachi” is not often heard in Tokyo or other places in Japan
because it is Okinawa’s dialect. “Iyu” means fish and “Machi” is a market so “Iyumachi” is
the perfect name for this fish market in Okinawa. Tourists and also local people come and
buy fresh marine products.

You can feel the tropical atmosphere from fish

There are 23 shops gathered and you can buy blocks of tune or sliced sashimi. In
addition, some shops have dining space and offer a tuna bowl for the reasonable price.
Some people say the fish market in Okinawa is more like an aquarium because of the
colorful fish. It is fun to just go look around and see how different the fish in Okinawa is
from the rest of Japan. Some shops are closed in the afternoon so visiting in the morning is
recommended.

More scenes to watch in the market

Besides fish, it is open to everyone from 6 o’clock in the morning. In the morning,
you can see the lively bidding scene. The kitchen with glass walls allows visitors to see how
the whole tune is filleted. The huge tuna is cut block by block so fast and the professional
skill is excellent.
