Kyoto city KYOCERA Museum of Art

Art & Architecture Beautiful Scenery

The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art lies within Okazaki Koen Park in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. Its main building was first established in 1933, and it is the oldest existing public art museum in Japan. The museum had a renewal opening in the spring of 2020, showing of the new incorporation of contemporary design into the historical blended Japanese- and Western-style architecture. The collections at the museum begin with Kyoto Gadan paintings that had a heavy influence on Japanese art history from the Meiji period through the Showa period, and center around modern period Kyoto art. One point of interest is the newly established Higashiyama Cube, a space furnished with the latest equipment and dedicated to showcasing contemporary art. The museum also houses a Japanese garden that Ogawa Jihei VII, a garden architect integral to modern Kyoto, is thought to have been involved in designing as well as the Higashiyama Cube Terrace (free admission), from which visitors can gaze out at the magnificence of Higashiyama and enjoy the natural landscape of Kyoto.
