Tea Ceremony in Kenrokuen: Sit With a Master Who Has Been Doing This for Decades
Inside one of Japan's most celebrated gardens, a tea master continues a tradition that once welcomed the Maeda lords — and now she's welcoming you

Meeting place
Kenrokutei tea house, inside Kenrokuen Garden
Overview
Kenrokutei — the tea house inside Kenrokuen Garden — has welcomed guests as the Maeda lords once did. Your host is a tea master who has spent her life not just learning the technical steps of chado, but the philosophy beneath them: how to prepare a bowl of tea in a way that reflects the season, the weather, the particular mood of the day, and the person sitting across from you.
Each session is different. She'll guide you through the ritual at a pace that lets you actually absorb it — the sound of the kettle, the weight of the bowl in your hands, what the different movements mean and why they matter. And she'll talk with you: about daily mindfulness in modern Japan, about how this ancient practice continues to evolve, and about why a garden built 400 years ago still teaches her something new every morning.
Want a private session?
For solo travellers, couples, or groups needing translation into languages other than English — message the host directly to arrange a private booking.
The wagashi (Japanese sweets) served alongside your tea are sourced from confectioners she knows personally — chosen to complement that specific day's season and light.
Spring:Sakura-shaped nerikiri — soft, delicate, faintly floral
Summer:Kuzu mochi — translucent, cool, served on ice-blue lacquer
Autumn/Winter:Chesnut yokan — dense, earthy, made from Ishikawa walnuts
Note:
This experience takes place inside Kenrokuen Garden. The garden entrance fee (¥320/person) is paid separately at the gate — it's not included in this booking, and we encourage you to arrive early and spend time in the garden before or after your session.

Route
- 1
Enter Kenrokuen — allow time to wander before your session
Meet at the Kenrokutei sign near the fountain inside the garden. The tea master recommends arriving 20–30 minutes early to walk the garden paths — it prepares the mind for what follows in the tea room.
- 2
Enter the formal tea room — leave the outside world behind
The tea room at Kenrokutei is insulated from the garden's outside views by design — a deliberate feature of traditional tea architecture that focuses attention inward. Your host welcomes you, explains how to sit and hold the bowl, and shares the philosophy of ichi-go ichi-e: this moment, unrepeatable.
- 3
Watch the preparation — then drink the tea you helped make
Under patient guidance, you'll try preparing tea yourself — the whisk, the bowl, the motion. She corrects gently. Then you receive the seasonal wagashi sweet, chosen for this specific day, before drinking your matcha. The interaction between the sweet and the tea is intentional: she'll explain why.
- 4
The quietest, most memorable conversation you'll have in Japan
After the tea, the session opens into dialogue. She shares personal insights about finding calm, about how this practice shapes her daily life, and about what artisans who make her wagashi think about their craft. Photography is welcome — she'll tell you when.
