The Higashi Chaya District, a popular tourist spot in Kanazawa, was designated as a national important historical district for its beautiful, traditional buildings. The buildings have traditional wooden walls and doors, and the pavement is made of old stones. It is a great area for enjoying food and shopping, with cafes and shops selling traditional Japanese sweets and arts and crafts. In the Ochaya Shima, designated an important cultural property, you can experience a traditional tea house.

It’s about a 40-minute walk from Kanazawa Station, and in spring or autumn, it’s a lovely area to explore on foot. You can enjoy charming, traditional streetscapes, modern and stylish sushi, and sake that tells the story of Ishikawa’s rich history. If you’re visiting Kanazawa, this is definitely an area worth wandering around and discovering at your own pace.
Pretty nice area to get more of a feeling for old style Japanese architecture, the shops were interesting to explore, with a great udon place should you feel like getting cold udon on a hot summer day.
I really enjoyed walking around Higashi Chaya District. The historic streets and traditional wooden buildings gave it a unique atmosphere, and there were plenty of small shops and cafés to explore. It was a relaxing place to experience a different side of Kanazawa.
It had the nice traditional Japanese feel when walking around. It is a great place to go to experience real Japanese culture as long as authentic food. Good place if you want to get away from the busy city and feel more relaxed.
Such a unique and awesome experience, very traditional energy with the specific buildings and architecture that this district has to offer. There's an old time feel here, yet it is also paired with a new vibe of restaurants that have opened up not too long ago, that contrast and combination was very cool to witness.
Lots of really cool places here, with lots of authentic restraunts and places to visit. It really does feel like stepping into an older Japanese time.
