Overview

Ishikawa is one of Japan's great sake regions. It's home to the Noto Toji, one of the country's four legendary guilds of master brewers, and its pure snowmelt water flows down from Mount Hakusan.

Hidden in the lattice-fronted streets of Higashi Chaya, Higashiyama Shuraku carries more than 100 sakes from breweries across Ishikawa, from household names to rare bottles you won't find outside the prefecture.

Belly up to the standing bar on the ground floor, Japan's classic kaku-uchi style, and enjoy a tasting flight of 3 local sakes. Compare how each one differs, from crisp and dry to rich and savory to fruity and floral, and find the style that suits you best. The staff are happy to share the story behind every bottle.

Afterward, relax upstairs on tatami, or take home a bottle of your new favorite.

Why you'll love it:

  • Taste 3 sakes from across the prefecture in one stop, no brewery-hopping needed
  • Discover your personal sake style with help from local staff
  • Fits easily into a stroll around Higashi Chaya, and Fumuroya is right next door
