About kayo

Nice to meet you! I’m Kayo. I’m the okami—the person who helps run Totonoya, a farmhouse guesthouse nestled in the satoyama hills of Kanazawa. I love having fun, taking care of people, and—perhaps most of all—cats! When I think, “That sounds fun!”, I’m the kind of person who simply gives it a try. At Totonoya, I’m surrounded by a wonderfully diverse group of people who love having fun. In a way, you could say we are “Hyakusho” (百姓). But Hyakusho doesn’t simply mean “farmer.” To us, a Hyakusho is a master of everyday life— someone who can do a hundred different things and find joy in the many skills, wisdom, and pleasures of living. Growing rice. Growing vegetables. Making our own umeboshi Raising chickens. Growing shiitake mushrooms on logs. Making pottery. Cooking. Even running our own little tamago-kake-gohan shop! And if there’s something we want to try, we simply give it a go. Events and workshops often begin with a simple thought: “Wouldn’t that be fun?” When people come together, something new always seems to happen. Someone’s talent becomes someone else’s inspiration. Little by little, we keep discovering new ways to enjoy life. That’s what being a Hyakusho means to us: being a pro at living— with a hundred ways to create, make, grow, share, and have fun. I call these wonderful people my Toto Family. Totonoya is more than just a place to stay. Here, we don’t wait for someone else to create the fun. We create it together. Bring your favorite things. Bring what you’re good at. Bring something you’ve always wanted to try. Our motto is: “Fun comes first.” So, from today, you’re part of the Toto Family too! Come play with us in the satoyama of Kanazawa, and discover your own hundred ways to enjoy life. 🌾🐓🐈
