The Toukasan Festival is one of the 3 biggest festivals in Hiroshima and is also known as the “Yukata Festival”. It is said that the Toukasan Festival brings summer to Hiroshima, the locals dress in yukata from the start till the end of the festival.
The festival is held over 3 days and attracts around 450,000 people every year. Only for 3 days in the year, you can meet the shintai (objects of worship housed in the temple that are believed to contain the spirit of a deity) of the god Inari Daimyojin. This makes this festival such a rare occasion to offer a prayer so close to the spirit of the god. About 80,000 people come to pray at the Enryu Temple during the festival. The Toukasan Festival is a special event beloved by locals and visitors.
Where & When?
The first weekend of June every year, Toukasan Festival is held in Enryu Temple in Hiroshima City. The Enryu Temple deifies the god Inari Daimyojin which is the guardian deity of Hokke-kyo Buddhism and the festival is devoted to Inari Daimyojin. The name “Touka” comes from the Chinese reading of the word “Inari”, the god of rice and prosperity in Japan.
History
The Enryu Temple was founded in 1619 by Nagaakira Asano, the first feudal lord of Hiroshima. The temple and locals have devotedly worshipped the Inari Daimyojin since 1619. It is believed that the mighty power of the Inari Daimyojin has protected Hiroshima Castle and provided peace and prosperity to the people.
The Toukasan Festival started in 1620, the year following the temple’s founding. For around 400 years, Inari Daimyojin has been an object of worship by the local people of Hiroshima.
