Pretty relaxing environment overall, disappointed that the place was closed off but the view overall was still nice to look at.
Gyokusen'inmaru Garden (Kanazawa Castle Park)
“The lords' private garden, framed by castle stone walls.”

Gyokusen'inmaru Garden is a strolling pond garden inside Kanazawa Castle Park, named after Gyokusen'in—wife of the second Maeda lord and daughter of the warlord Oda Nobunaga—whose residence once stood here. Work on the garden began in 1634 under the third lord Maeda Toshitsune, making it older than the famous Kenrokuen next door, and successive lords refined it until the feudal era ended. Lost in the Meiji period, it was recreated from excavated remains and reopened in 2015. Where Kenrokuen served as a stage for entertaining guests, this was the lords' private retreat, and it feels different: a compact, three-dimensional landscape that uses the castle's steep terrain, with a stepped waterfall spilling from midway up the stone walls. Look closely at the stonework—patterned like scattered poem cards, it was built as scenery for the garden itself, something found nowhere else in Japan's castles. The Gyokusen-an rest house serves matcha with seasonal Japanese sweets, and the garden is illuminated on Friday and Saturday evenings and the nights before holidays. Admission is free.
